Well you arent giving very much information, there are actually many types of spider that fit your description, and Florida is a hot spot for many spiders, both native and introduced. Here is a page with many spiders both big and small that fit the description.

It sounds like the European garden spider. I checked and they do live in the Southeast, USA. I am not 100% sure though.
