Does anyone know if you can dye or bleach dark hair white (not yellow or light blondel...white).?

My hair has been dyed for over twenty years. I started getting white hair in my early thirties. Now, at least half of it it white and the rest remaining is dark brown. I want to know if anyone knows if you can just get it white (not bleached yellow). I want to make it white and then maybe just get darker streaks in the areas where there still is dark hair. I don't want to just let it grow out because then I have to deal with all the roots and different colors. Thanks

When you say half of it is white are talking about your roots or natural white hair? What part of your hair is dark?

The reason I ask about what part of your hair is already dark, is because bleach will really dry out your hair....as I'm sure you probably know. If you're going to apply the bleach to your ends, be prepared for some frizz. You will need to take special care of your bleached hair, since it will be extremely dry from all the chemicals.

You're right, the only way to lighten dark hair is to bleach it. To get to white you will need to apply anywhere from 2-4 maybe 5 or more bleach applications. The number of applications depends on your hair type, condition, etc. After you get to a platinum blonde using bleach you need to get a toner to take out the yellow tones, which will turn the hair white. I've heard good things about a toner made by Manic Panic, but if you go to your local beauty supply shop you could probably find something.

Good Luck!

go to a stylist. really. that's too risky a move to try to do on your own.

You can but you won't be able to do it all at once. You'll have to work up to the white since your hair is so dark. I agree with going to a stylist. They can help you achieve what you want. =)

yes, of course you can get it to white....the way hair loses color is actually called " decolorization"....and there is a chart that shows the way hair loses its color by bleaching.... the chart goes from brown to white......gradually and its brown-brown/red - red- red/orange-orange-orange/yellow-yellow-y...

So with that being said ....hopefully it shows you that if the bleach is left on LONG enough......then YES it will get white..... so the way to get it white? ......

leave the bleach on till it goes through all those stages....then as soon as it turns the yellow/white....you'll want to be ready as soon as it hits that white stage to take it off ....immediately....the thing about it is....the longer you leave bleach on the more drying and damaging it is to the hair. But it totally depends on your porosity, texture and any previous chemical treatments whether your hair can handle it well or not.....

Which is something you should get some prefessional advice on.....or if you have done your own hair long enough you might know on your own.

another option is to get your hair to the yellow/white stage and then 'tone' it white.

HTH
